Shimmy Exclusive Interview

TRAVIS WALL

Shimmy: Tell us about your training in general.

Travis Wall: I started pretty much when I was born. It literally was only five days after I was born that I was at my moms studio. I've always danced, technically age 3 was my first class and my mom has always been my teacher.

Shimmy: How did SYTYCD change your life?

Travis Wall: In every way possible. My dancing, personality, outlook on life, literally everything. In my case it definitely was all for the better. Life has exploded after the show. and that's exactly what I went on the show for, exposure.

Shimmy: What have you done since the show and tour wrapped?

Travis Wall: Ive been teaching on conventions, choreographing my butt off, moved to LA then to NYC. I've been researching alot of different genres of art, making clothing and costumes for people. I'm putting so much work in now with choreography because by the time I'm 25 I wanna be on top of the choreography world and doing my own shows and stuff. I will not wait until, say I'm 45! You've got to work your way up so why not start now!

Shimmy: What dance related projects are you working on now?

Travis Wall: I'm working on the 4th season of SYTYCD. I choreographed all the auditions this year as well and I will be setting choreography on the top 20. I also teach on a convention called NUVO and I'm going to have my own show next New Years that is basically a runway fashion dance show in New York.

Shimmy: What/who inspires you in dance and in life?

Travis Wall: Beyonce! Ha! No but seriously, I love her! My mom is pretty much everything to me front and back. She is the reason I do what I do. My best friend/roomate Ivan and it's just nice to always have a friend by your side no matter what you do. Jason Parsons inspires me so much in dance and in life. Danny Tidwell alwaya pushes me to be better.

Shimmy: What is your dream role to dance?

Travis Wall: I don't really have one. I guess there is no dream role because I haven't made it up yet. I always say you have to make your own stage to dance on. Don't sit back and watch people talk about starting something new and amazing, you have to do it yourself.

Shimmy: Favorite performance to date?

Travis Wall: I kinda want to say doing Wade's piece on Dancing With the Stars. I think because it wasn't part of the reality competition, but it was a paid job by Wade. I loved the routine and the entire week leading up to it. Of course I still love the bench routine and sexy back (from SYTYCD).

Shimmy: We've heard rumblings of a clothing line with Ivan, is it true?

Travis Wall: .Yeah I was really into this past fall because I thought I would have more time on my hands but I was wrong. I've been even busier than last year. It will eventually happen yes. As of now I've just been making things for friends and events. It specializes in girl corsets and guy vests. Its gonna be called Ovalee Beatin!

Shimmy: We've also heard that you'll be a big part of SYTYCD again this season. Can you tell us more?

Travis Wall: Not really big. it's just really nice to be on the other side of it now! I like watching how everything goes down and what goes into the process. I cant even imagine being on this side and watching myself walk in and audition. but yeah, make sure you guys watch this season!

Shimmy: Movmnt- how did you get involved and how is the magazine different from the other dance related publications?

Travis Wall: My brother Danny and David own the magazine. It is different cause it just doesn't focus on dance. It involves fashion, music and society that revolves around dance. The photo shoots are OVA!

Shimmy: What are three things that you cannot possibly live without?

Travis Wall: Chick-fil-a! humor! and a shower!

Shimmy: If we swiped your ipod for an hour, who would we be listening to?

Travis Wall: Depends on what day and where I'm at. I have a play list for when I'm walking in the city. Recently Ive been listening to Portishead, Sigur Ros, Jason Mraz, Madonna, Beatles classics, and old classic 70's and 80's disco songs. It's time to bring it back.

Shimmy: Where do you see yourself a decade from now?

Travis Wall: I can't tell you. If you would have told me two years ago before the show that I would be here, I would have laughed at you ha!!

Shimmy: If the gift of dance disappeared tomorrow, what would you be doing?

Travis Wall: Probably fashion or comedy! But I'dstill be choreographing and directing. My limits are not just dance!

Shimmy: Tell us something about yourself that will be a surprise.

Travis Wall: I'm allergic to seafood. I don't like millionaires with no talent. I still sometimes pick my nose. Oops that one slipped. I can't sleep without socks on.

Shimmy: What would you like to say to your fans?

Travis Wall: Thanks again for all your support once again. We are just dancers and you guys kinda make us a big deal which is crazy, but thanks. After the show we're just supposed to disappear back into the industry but some of you guys make better things happen for us, so thanks!

Shimmy Exclusive Interview

Neil Haskell

Photos: Tania Gressell

Shimmy: So what have you been doing these past few months?

Neil Haskell: Well, the (So You Think You Can Dance) tour ended at the beginning of December so I kind of had that month off. Then I went to film a movie for MTV in January and February. It's called The American Mall and filming it was really fun. I've always wanted to crossover into film and television and this project was an excellent chance for me. It's a musical so I was able to combine dance with singing as well. It's a great opportunity and I felt that a musical movie would be the best way for me to break into the film world. It's more natural for me and now I know a lot about that business. It has also opened up a lot of doors and that's really cool. I just got back to New York about two weeks ago and I've been just getting back into the swing of things here. Taking class and auditioning again.

Shimmy: What exactly is your background in dance?

Neil Haskell: Well I grew up in Buffalo, New York and I trained at David Demarie Dance Studio. I also trained at a ballet studio as well. When I was fifteen I started going to summer intensives for ballet and that definitely gave me five or seven weeks of solid training, six days a week. I eventually moved to New York and I did a Broadway show called, "The Times They Are A Changin" and then I did So You Think You Can Dance.

Shimmy: Now that you have had several months to do other things, looking back, how was the whole So You Think You Can Dance experience for you?

Neil Haskell: I realize that the highs from it, all the great things that went on were just so awesome. Everything is so much better than what I thought it was as it was happening. I tried not to get too excited while I was on the show, but now when I look back it was such a great experience to go through and it will be great to look back on years from now. I also realized that the lows really weren't that low. Even though they felt really low as they happened- like being in the bottom three- it hurt that week, but looking back now it was just such an overall positive experience for me. When I was on tour I loved watching everybody perform every single night and seeing them grow. It was an amazing thing to watch us grow not just as dancers, but as people.

Shimmy: Are you still in touch with anyone from the show?

Neil Haskell: I'm not as in touch as I should be right now but I think everybody has been really busy. I'm going to be in Buffalo this weekend and I know that Sara is going to be there with the Avril Lavigne tour so I'm hoping to see her.

I've seen Danny Tidwell a couple of times in the city and I've seen Sabra and Kameron as well. So I've seen a few people that have been in and out of New York. Oh and Dominic decided to call me at 4am once too (laughing).

Shimmy:What inspires your dancing?

Neil Haskell: I guess right now it's really about making my body feel good. When I'm in class doing a jump or turn, somebody else's movement- it just feels so good to be able to do that. I think that's what keeps me dancing.

Shimmy: What choreographers do you love working with?

Neil Haskell: I think Wade Robson's choreography is the most challenging. It's strange and quirky. You have to find a way to learn where your weight, your hip, foot and just everything is supposed to be or else it won't look right. The way he does it is so unique that if you aren't doing it exactly as he's telling you to then it's going to look awkward unique rather than cool unique. I love being able to do his stuff. I also love being able to dance Mia Micheal's stuff because it is more my style. Her jazz and contemporary feel is very unique as well and it suit my body and way of moving.

Shimmy: If you weren't dancing what might you be doing instead?

Neil Haskell: I don't know. I'd probably be singing or acting or doing something where I'm still performing.

Shimmy: What advice do you have for dancers that have yet to make their mark?

Neil Haskell: Keep working as hard as you can. Be in class as often as you can, take extra classes. Watch the other people in class because I think you can learn the most from watching other people, whether they are better than you or not. There is always something that can be learned when somebody else is dancing.

Shimmy: You haven't done a lot of press in the last few months so what would you like to say to your fans at this point?

Neil Haskell: I'm still working and I cannot wait for the MTV movie to come out in August so that people can see what else I can do. Life has been really exciting and who knows what will be coming out next!

Shimmy Exclusive Interview

Shane Sparks

Shimmy: Please tell readers how you got started dancing.

Shane Sparks: Dancing chose me. I played sports and did gymnastics, but none of them kept my attention like dancing. I was born to dance, and nothing else. I couldn’t stop if I tried!

Shimmy: Where do you get your inspiration?

Shane Sparks: I get inspired by anything and everything; music, animals, TV, people, and anything that has something to say. I love songs that tell a story, and then I bring it to life. I love that.

Shimmy: You’ve choreographed for television, film, videos, etc. At this point, what is your favorite genre to work in?

Shane Sparks: Actually, I love teaching more than anything because I am free to do whatever I want. But if I had to choose, I would say movies, because there are no boundaries.

Shimmy: You’re not returning to SYTYCD this season, overall how was that experience?

Shane Sparks: I am not returning this season, but you never know what the future holds! I am going to miss it, and miss showing the world the thing I love doing most, choreography.

Shimmy: How has it been working on “America’s Best Dance Crew?”

Shane Sparks: It is the biggest blessing I could have ever received. This show is incredible, from the crews, to the creators. Randy Jackson is the man, and I think him for believing in me.

Shimmy: Are you still teaching, doing workshops, etc?

Shane Sparks: Yes, I am still teaching and doing workshops. I still travel with The Pulse, and I am still teaching at Millennium. I will do it until my legs fall off!

Shimmy: What projects do you have in the works, and planned for the future?

Shane Sparks: I am working on a film called “Backdown” with Marques Houston, and Omarion, and the creators of “You Got Served.” There is a new movie I also am doing called “The Jump Off.”

Shimmy: If I swiped your iPod for an hour, what would I be listening to?

Shane Sparks: It would be straight R&B, Neyo, Chris Brown, and a little bit of Boys II Men’s first album. Flo Rida’s “Low Low Low” is on there too! I listen to pretty much everything, and I also can’t get enough of Alicia Keys’ new CD. I love it!

Shimmy: Three things you cannot live without.

Shane Sparks: God, my mom, dance, music, and Francia, my girlfriend.

Shimmy: If you could switch places with anyone [not in the dance world] for 24 hours, who would it be?

Shane Sparks: Adam from Adam and Eve, because if I could be him for a day, back in the day, I could have changed the world!

Shimmy: What advice would you give to aspiring dancers?

Shane Sparks: To dream! I have been a dreamer all my life, and I dreamed about my life right now. If you want it, you can have it. Work hard and stay focused, stay away from the drama, don’t let any male or female stop you from going for your dream. I love you all, and one day we will all be dreaming together

Shimmy Exclusive Interview- U.S. Ice Dancers Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov

Shimmy: Go back in time a bit for the readers that aren't familiar with you, tell us how you met and about your early training together.

Melissa: We actually met on the internet. We were both looking for a partner because our previous ones had quit. Denis had posted on the International Skating Union website that he was looking for a partner and I responded and we talked via email for a few months. We decided that we wanted to have a tryout and on September 1, 2000 Denis came to the US to have a tryout. On February 2, 2001 we got married. And now 7 1/2yrs. later he never used his return ticket home.

Shimmy: You've recently switched coaches and now train with Priscilla Hill. Why the change?

Melissa and Denis: It was just time for a change for us. We collaborated with Priscilla when we were choreographing the "Fallen Angels" in the spring and we really liked working with her. We felt that all our personalities clicked and the chemistry was right.

Shimmy: How has it benefited you?

Denis: She is a very calm and wonderful person. She is very knowledgeable in figure skating and knows good skating.

Shimmy: How are you doing after suffering the bad fall at Skate Canada?

Melissa: We are getting better. I have fully recovered but Denis has not. When we fell all the attention was on my injuries but Denis's were kind of overlooked. He is suffering from a really bad knee injury that has been gnawing at him since last season. He has level 4 type tendenitous and a lot of grinding and crackling whenever he bends. The doctor told us that if he pushes it now then he will have to have surgery. So as athletes it is a very hard decision to be made to think about our health and life after sport. But when we were faced with it he still has to walk and use his knees for the rest of his life.

Shimmy: How is your training coming since then?

Melissa and Denis: It is at a halt right now. We are making sure that we do everything that we need to heal Denis right so he can have no problems for next season and onward. But we are looking forward to when we can start training hard and skating full time again!

Shimmy: Where were you during National's and how was it just watching rather than participating?

Melissa and Denis: We were at home. We are very upset about how the season turned out. The accident in Canada really set us back. It was very hard for us to have to miss the season but we are really concentrating on coming back strong with a vengeance next season. We love skating and we love performing and can't wait to get back out there.

Shimmy: When can we hope to see you next?

Melissa As soon as Denis is back at 100% then we will hopefully start with some shows this summer. Then it will be back to training hard for the next Grand Prix's in the fall.

Shimmy: Of all the programs you've skated, what are your favorites and why?

Melissa and Denis: All of our programs that we have skated are very special and sentimental to us. We like to pick themes and music that means something to us and that are unique . But I think that with each program it is better and better. We know that our best is yet to come.

Shimmy: What OD rhythm do you enjoy most?

Melissa and Denis: Our favorite part about the Original Dance is that we get to be completely different characters in each of them. It is great because we sometimes have rhythms that we would not normally choose for ourselves but it ends up to be really good for us and we love it! But if we were forced to choose than we loved the latin theme and we also like Waltz. But we also loved and had a blast with Tango as well! It's way to hard to choose!

Shimmy: What old school skaters inspired you when you were younger?

Melissa: When I was younger my childhood idol was Brian Boitano. I loved his skating and he is part of the reason I started skating in the first place.

Denis: I love Torvill & Dean, Grischuk & Platov, Usova & Zhulin, Klimova & Ponemarenko. They all bring their own style and qualities that no one else can do and is unique to them.

Shimmy: Any rituals before you skate?

Melissa: I actually didn't really even know that I have a ritual or superstition but, I realized that I always tie my left skate first. It has just now become a habit and sort of a superstition. I don't know why but if I have an off night you might want to ask which skate was tied first!LOL

Denis: I always step with my left foot first on the ice. Don't ask me why.

Shimmy: When did you know that is was love, not just a partnership?

Denis: I fell in love with her from the time I saw her. She was everything that I could have dreamed for and more. When you know, you just know.

Shimmy: If I borrowed your ipod for an hour, what would I be listening to?

Denis: You would probably hear a lot of classical and orchestral music.

Melissa: I don't actually have an ipod but lets just say that I do for the fun of it. You would hear a very eclectic collection of music. Anything from U2, Aerosmith, Red Hot Chili Peppers to Oldies, to famous classical pieces, Hip Hop, and Broadway hits.

Shimmy: Three things you cannot be without?

Melissa: My family, my cell phone, and my dog Suede

Denis: Family, my dog Suede, my car

Shimmy: (NON) Guilty pleasures?

Denis: Seducing my wife! (Not really guilty but a pleasure!)

Melissa: A glass of Sauvignon Blanc and making love to my husband. (Not really guilty but a pleasure!)

Shimmy: If in ten years you are no longer skating, what might you be doing instead?

Denis: Maybe running for office.

Melissa: Raising a family. But hopefully I will always be doing some kind of performing.

Shimmy: Your fans have really supported you through a rough patch, what would you like them to know?

Melissa and Denis: That it means more to us than we can express. Each and everyone one of them is special to us and to know that they are behind us in good times and in bad is what makes them true fans. We can't wait to perform again for all of you because that is what makes us the happiest is when someone comes up to us and tells us that we touched them.

Shimmy Exclusive Interview- Jaimie Goodwin

Shimmy: How has life changed for you after doing SYTYCD?
Jaimie: Life has been amazing! It's fun to have people recognize me. As far as jobs the recognition and opportunties have been fantastic. It can be stressful as well because now that everyone knows you, especially in the " dance world" you have expectations to fulfill. That's a minor thing though so I can't complain.

Shimmy: What number by another couple was your favorite on SYTYCD?
Jaimie: Danny and Neils' Two Princes.

Shimmy: Tell us something funny from behind the scenes.
Jaimie: Dominic. Just Dominic!

Shimmy: Which judge did you feel most comfortable with?
Jaimie: I can't lie, I love Nigel.

Shimmy: What have you been doing these past few months?
Jaimie: I moved to NYC, working with NYCDA, and I just recently did a job with Mia Michaels.

Shimmy: Tell us about NYCDA.
Jaimie: NYCDA is the most fun! Sabra and Allie (Holker) and I have been traveling with them and we honestly have a blast together! Its also really cool to meet all the dancers that come to watch or take class. You'd be amazed how many people can inspire you in class, even the babies.

Shimmy: What is your dream role?
Jaimie: I'd love to dance in a company- but not yet. Right now I'm happy doing different projects. Its really helping me find myself and explore what I really want do later.

Shimmy: Is there any different dance genre that you'd love to try?
Jaimie: I'd love to learn more ballroom. Not so much waltz, but I really wanted to do an Argentine Tango or the Paso. I was in a Flamenco company for years and I love the sensuality and passion in those genres.

Shimmy: What inspires you to dance?
Jaimie: So many things and so many people. My family got me started. My teacher, Denise is like my mom and she's kept me going. Watching other dancers, both professionals and students, makes me want to try new things and push myself.

Shimmy: Do you have any rituals before performing?
Jaimie: I always pray. I always talk to Denise and we do this thing called "zaa". Hard to explain that...

Shimmy: If you had to trade places with one person for 24 hours who would it be?
Jaimie: Uhhh... Adrianna Lima the Victoria's Secret model.. (Laughing) just because I've always wanted to be one and she's my favorite.

Shimmy: 3 things you cannot live without.
Jaimie: God, family/friends, dance.

Shimmy: What is on your ipod?
Jaimie: Alot of Damien Rice, Panic at the Disco, Rachel Yamagata, Coldplay, Rihanna, everything really.

Shimmy: If in 10 years you are not dancing, what might you be doing instead?
Jaimie: Having babies.

Shimmy: The best thing about being on SYTYCD was_________________.
Jaimie: Dancing on tv! It's a dream!!

Shimmy Exclusive Interview- Benji Schwimmer

Photo: Twin Lens Photography

Shimmy: What have you been up to lately?

Benji: Well, I think I get that question everyday from at least someone who recognizes me when I'm out and about. I used to feel a pressure in answering every single detail before our paths finished crossing. Now, all I say is that I'm very busy. I'm working constantly, and I'm happy. So, I'm very busy, working constantly and I'm happy.

Shimmy: You choreographed a West Coast Swing routine on last seasons' SYTYCD and it was a big hit. How long have you been choreographing and what is that process like for you?

Benji: I've actually been choreographing and teaching dance professionally since I was 12. I have to be very inspired from the music or else I'd rather not waste my time in contriving a piece or a routine together. I download music constantly, and with that I find a choice song or two everyone once and a while where I HAVE to do something to it. I usually use my frustrations in my daily and personal life and put them all into my dancing or someone else's dancing. If I'm completely happy, I tend to find piece where I'm happy. If it calls for something dramatic or whatever emotion I need to convey, I just try and put myself dangerously in that specific place where I've felt that emotion before. I've been through a lot in my life both extreme highs and lows, so I find it very easy to relate to any kind of song, hence choreography is almost always a beautiful and personal experience.

Shimmy: Is there a genre of dance (outside your specialties) that you'd like to explore more?

Benji: Well, I'm a perfectionist. So in all, I truly believe that I'm constantly making DANCE in general my specialty. I've been exploring with various genres and training in them to open my facility and knowledge a bit more so as to be better all around. My new dances for this year are ballet and maybe exploring a bit of international Latin again. Let alone last year I've been focusing teaching and choreographing a lot more in the fields of jazz and swing and will continue to do so this year.

Shimmy: Where do you find your inspiration?

Benji: I'm passionate about dancing. I love it. I constantly thirst for more opportunities to learn, to create and to explore. I push myself because I know there's always someone more talented and more able...so I have to keep myself up and ahead. I made the decision to be a dancer. There's nowhere to go but up up up...and be the best I can be.

Shimmy: You have worked with some truly gifted people. Tell us about some of your more memorable experiences.

Benji: I have been very fortunate to have been blessed with two amazingly kind and wonderful parents, who I accredit more to them than anyone for raising me to be a decent person and dancer. Living with them and having studio time this year is still the best experience. I love coming back to my studio to get a lesson from my dad. Or having my mom see me dance and her giving a very honest opinion. They made me for crying out loud. and through them I know my cousin Heidi, my sister Lacey and my other dance examples undefeated world Latin champions, Donnie Burns and Gayor Fairweather. I'm actually being interviewed while I'm staying at Donnie's house in the UK as we speak today. I had the opportunity to do a show with them along with my parents when I was 12 and 13. A few months back we reunited to do another private show for a club of billionaires...and needless to say the pay was alright, but it pails in comparison to who I was sharing the with. It was truly an honor to be dancing alongside two of my living dance idols. It would be like a ballerina sharing the floor with Baryshnikov or a pop singer with Micheal. Too cool of an experience.

Video: maarit99

Shimmy: If you could trade places with someone outside of the dance world who would it be and why?

Benji: This may sound odd, but I would love to trade places with a pregnant woman. I feel like I'm still pretty young. I could always end up changing careers if I wanted to. I could always become almost anything in this life if I put my mind to it. But one thing I would never know is the feeling of having creation growing inside you. That would be pretty interesting I think.

Shimmy: Any guilty pleasures?

Benji: I've recently become a gym whore. Working out is wonderful for the body and mind and I'm seeing and feeling the effect. I actually did a show recently in Southport, England and wore a sleeveless costume. And no one made fun of me! At least i didn't hear it.

Shimmy: Flash forward ten years, what will you be doing?

Benji: In a perfect world I will be teaching my children how to dance.

Shimmy: What would you like your fans to know?

Benji: Nothing. I have a myspace...they find out nearly everything about me. I like keeping to myself and letting the dancing expose enough about me to them. I want to be respected as an artist, not a TV personality anymore. Don't get me wrong...I love my fans, I'm grateful for them. But respect and idolization are two very different things, and I prefer the latter.

Shimmy: Lastly, where will they see you next?

Benji: I'm flying around the world constantly....teaching choreographing performing, heck even acting a bit now. I have a movie or two in the works, but mostly I really love dancing. I've had some crazy offers lately to make a lot of money, but I've turned them down in order to continue to do what I want to master more than any other thing. Visit my new website www.gobenji.com

Shimmy Exclusive Interview- Musa Cooper

Shimmy: So how are you?

Musa: Good, good. Actually, I'm going on tour with Alicia Keys for about ten months. First we'll be in the U.K. until April 1st and then we'll come back for two weeks. Then we'll continue with a U.S. tour. We've been training for the last two weeks and we're leaving next Monday. By the time we're ready to leave I'll be ready for it.

Shimmy: What else have you been doing?

Musa: Basically, I've done a lot of commercials here and there. I did a Super Bowl commercial last year. I've done commercials for Chevy, Comcast, Popeye's Chicken. I've worked with Jay-Z. I'm going on calls and auditioning every other day. Dancing every other day too. I've done a lot of dance workshops here and there. I've been a judge at colleges and different events.

Shimmy: You have really launched yourself into a bunch of different genres. What are some of the best experiences that you've had in the last couple of years?

Musa: The most memorable thing is the show of course, So You Think You Can Dance. After the show I'd say the Super Bowl commercial because that is the most watched show in America and I signed with The Screen Actors Guild. The next big thing would be the Alicia Keys tour.

Shimmy: Speaking of So You Think You Can Dance, how did the show change your life?

Musa: Before the show I was already a working dancer in the industry. I didn't have much recognition on the west coast because all of my jobs were on the east coast. In 2002, I did the VMA awards at Radio City Music Hall. It was actually the first audition I'd ever gone to. After I landed that job I thought, Okay I think I have a career in dance, so I started doing more. I was getting constant work before the show but after it, even more work came, this time from all over the world. People calling me from India trying to do workshops... the show was like my business card to America, letting people know that I exist.

Shimmy: What are your biggest motivators right now?

Musa: The look on peoples face when I dance. I'm an entertainer, I love dancing and seeing people enjoying me dance. I definetly dance from within but I love the fact that whoever is watching me is being entertained. I love being in front of people and being able to wow somebody just by the way I move my foot or throw my hands in the air. People and music, that's motivation.

Shimmy: Are there any genres of dance that you'd like to branch out into?

Musa: I guess contemporary is something I can float into. The number I did on the show, it changed me. This just had me move and not have to jump and do steps all over the place. It was a very spiritual and emotional dance and that's a style that I would like to dip and dabble into. Unfortunately while getting a lot of work doing what I do, it is hard to turn down the money in order to go and train, paying someone else instead. I try not to turn down any jobs.

Shimmy: Your talent has really propelled you and in each job you've landed with some well-known names in the business. Who are some of the people that have inspired you?

Musa: Alicia Keys' choreographer, Tanisha Scott encouraged me because she saw through my weaknesses. She told me a story about herself, she started off basically how I started off and she is a blessing to work with.

Shimmy: How has becoming a dad turned your life upside down?

Musa: It's harder to go to work now. Gotta say bye to my wife, bye to both of them and I walk out of the house thinking, I'm leaving again, oh my god. I get home and she's asleep. Before I go to work she's asleep. I don't get to see her enough. That's maybe one of the negative parts of this career. To be constantly traveling and to have a child while doing this is hard on the heart. I want to be there when she crawls and walks but I know what my career is. There's a chance that I won't be able to see these things. I don't ever want to be gone too long.

Shimmy: Tell me something that I'd never in a million years guess about you.

Musa: That's a tough question. I think people find out that sometimes I'm too nice of a person. I'll let things slide too easily just to make sure that I don't hurt anybody's feelings. I'm a super nice guy and sometimes it gets me into trouble.

Shimmy: What would you like your fans to know?

Musa: I'd like everyone to know how appreciative I am of their support. I have people contacting me, sending emails and messages a lot and I'm grateful. I'm thankful to the fans because without there support I would not be where I am. I feel like they helped to catapoult me. I might be working behind the scenes a little, dancing behind someone but I'm still dancin'. Keep watching because every now and then I'll pop up.

Shimmy Exclusive Interview- Sara Von Gillern

Shimmy: What have you been up to these past few months?

Sara: I spent the month following tour in Colorado with family and friends in the mountains. I snowboarded every single day and tried to train every night. It was absolutely the best thing for me to relax and return to normalcy after the tour. In January I moved all of my belongings to an apt. in West Hollywood. I've been settled and adjusting now for the last two weeks. I'm currently taking classes, training, auditioning for upcoming performances and industry work, and I'm also going to be teaching masterclasses and workshops all over.

Shimmy: Tell us a bit about your current training.

Sara: I train everyday - there's spots everywhere in LA and everyone is always down to dance. I've definitely improved already in the short amount of time I've been out here. Everyone is willing to help you out as well so I've been learning like crazy. Right now I'm training with another dancer to do lindy hop. We'll be performing in a couple of weeks at several different events. Also, check out SiTV in a couple of weeks for a show called "The Drop." I'll be on that battling my fellow Ladies First member, and my best friend, Sassy Sol.

Shimmy: You've tried so many different styles of dance, if you didn't specialize in hip hop, what would your next choice be?

Sara: Definitely, tap or jazz. Those dance styles have been a huge influence on my current technique. If I didn't dance at all, though, I would most definitely be a professional snowboarder.

Shimmy: Any special rituals before you perform?

Sara: Not really, I like to listen to some good breaks to get me hype before I perform. But normally, I just prepare myself mentaly before what's to come.

Shimmy: Do you still figure skate? Were you involved in the sport competitively? If so, why did you stop?

Sara: I do still like to throw on my skates whenver there is a ice rink available. Mostly, at Copper Mtn. I will skate after a day of riding the slopes.

Shimmy: What is the best thing came to you as a result of doing SYTYCD?

Sara: Traveling on tour and meeting all of the fans who watched the show. Also, getting closer with all the other dancers that made the tour. We had a really fun time together!

Shimmy: Tell us something from behind the scenes of the show that we would never know otherwise.

Sara: Hmm. Hok and Lacey were dating...now no longer. I think you super fans know that one though. Pasha and I had to miss Nigel's birthday party to practice for our West Coast Swing performace.
That was a rough one!

Shimmy: What number from the show done by another couple did you love?

Sara: I loved Danny and Lacey's Samba routine. I also really liked Sabra's and Neil's table dance.

Shimmy: What was your favorite group number?

Sara: I really loved Wade's top 20 piece to Busta Rhymes. It brought all of the dancers together for the first time and the idea behind the dance was really unique and interesting.

Shimmy: How was it going on tour? What was your favorite stop and why?

Sara: I had too many favorite spots. I loved seeing my family and friends so Chicago and Tampa were very memorable for me.

Shimmy: What workshops do you have coming up?

Sara: Yes, I will be going to South Africa to teach as well as Montreal, Quebec in next two months. I will also be teaching in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Colorado as well.

Shimmy: How do you relax?

Sara: Funny enough how I relax is being active...hiking, snowboarding and going out dancing. I love to watch scary movies and I also enjoy writing.

Shimmy: Who is on your ipod?

Sara: EVERYONE! I love hip hop, underground artists and mainstream. I like a lot of DJ mixes with breaks and house. I also grew up listening to a lot of Rock, punk and ska music.

Shimmy: 3 things you cannot exist without?

Sara: MY BODY PILLOW, DOWN COMFORTER, and my friends.

Shimmy: Jump ahead 15 years, where do you see yourself in life?

Sara: Married with children living in New Zealand. haha sounds crazy right? I don't really know where I see myself - I just want to be happy and travel the world before I can settle down.

Shimmy: What would you like your fans to know?

Sara: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! You have been amazing people in my life. Your support means everything to me. I am so blessed to have shared my art with you and for you to support me is truly amazing. Thank you for watching, voting and for caring about the dance community. I hope that I have given you some inspiration to keep doing what you love and believe in yourself.

Shimmy Exclusive Interview- Dan Karaty

Shimmy: What was it like growing up with parents that performed on Broadway?

Dan: Well, growing up in the Karaty family was a lot of fun. I'm the youngest of five kids, and although my parents were Broadway veterans, when they decided to have kids they gave it up. My father was a stockbroker and my mom stayed home with us. My parents decided to open up a dance studio when I was about 13 years old, and that's when I started to dance. They certainly had plenty of knowledge, talent and experience to pass on to me.

Shimmy: What was your own experience in Footloose like?

Dan: My experience in Footloose was brief, but amazing. To be a part of an original Broadway cast was something I always wanted, and it made my parents very proud. To be honest though, we opened in October and I gave my notice in November…I had one semester left at New York University and wanted to finish my education. If I took any more time off I knew I would never go back.

Shimmy: Would you ever return to the boards?

Dan: I wouldn't return as a performer, but as a choreographer or director? I would be there in a heartbeat, that's another dream of mine.

Shimmy: When did you transition from performer to choreographer?

Dan: The transition from a performer to a choreographer just sort of happened. Wade Robson and I worked together quite a bit, and while I was dancing on some gigs for him I began helping out with choreography. We always worked well together and things just happened from there.

Shimmy: What was it like working with Britney Spears back when she was at the top of her game?

Dan: Britney was an absolute joy to work with. We created some memorable performances together and that girl really knew how to turn it on when she hit the stage. Britney was always a hard worker and didn't quit until she got it right. I wish her nothing but the best.

Shimmy: You've dabbled in so many areas- teaching, judging, doing commercials, choreographing tours and television- what do you enjoy the most?

Dan: You know, my career has continued to evolve over the past 10 years or so and I've been happy every step of the way. I consider myself a lucky man because I do what I love. Honestly, I'm excited to see where things take me next…but I'm extremely happy with what I'm doing now. Choreographing movies and commercials and being on television, it's not so bad 

Shimmy: So You Think You Can Dance has brought your work to the masses, will you return for season four?

Dan: I'll be there! I really can't wait to see what amazing talent shows up this year. Oh, and rumor has it that I'll be showing up on other versions of the show around the world. See you overseas too!

Shimmy: What contestants from the show did you enjoy working with the most and why?

Dan: I love performers more than anything else. Yeah, show me that you can dance, but entertain me! That's what I'm really looking for. Nick Lazzarini from season 1, Lacey from season 3, those are the type of dancers I love to work with. They bring so much to the table and make it fun.

Shimmy: The JUMP Convention- tell us about it.

Dan: Well, Gil Stroming is the man in charge and he does an incredible job. He has really changed the convention world and has taken it to a whole new level by having a great faculty, live music, amazing sets, and so much more. All of us on JUMP travel around the country to teach, inspire and motivate dancers of all ages. From hip-hop to jazz to contemporary, we offer the kids the best of everything. And oh yeah, this past summer we held our national finals at Radio City Music Hall, and this summer we'll be holding it at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles.

Shimmy: What inspires you?

Dan: Inspiration can really come from anything…an experience in my life, an incredible dancer, a piece of music I hear, anything. I do my best to keep things fun and entertaining for the masses to enjoy. I like to make people smile, laugh, or at the very least have a good time, that's my goal when I'm creating.

Shimmy: What are "dream roles" for you?

Dan: Ha, actually, what I'm doing right now is a dream for me. Hopefully I can do more of the same. I really would love to choreograph and direct a musical…and anything else I can get my hands on.

Shimmy: If I swiped your ipod for an hour, what would I be listening to?

Dan: My choices in music can vary depending on the mood I'm in. I love listening to Kanye, and chilling out to Maxwell. Oh, and Led Zeppelin's music is forever. I'll always love Biggie and Jay-Z…and any old school hip-hop.

Shimmy: Three things you cannot live without.

Dan: The New York Yankees, the New York Giants, and Starbucks!

Shimmy: You have a degree in journalism. What areas are of interest to you?

Dan: You know, I've always just loved to write. I don't know if I'll ever have a career in it, but its something I like to do in my down time. I would love to someday sit down and write about all of the crazy things I've done, seen, and experienced. I'm not sure if anyone else would be interested, but it seems readable to me.

Shimmy: Leap ahead ten years, if you are no longer involved in dance what might you be doing instead?

Dan: Ah, that's a good one. First of all, I'll hopefully be married with some kids running around. Whether I'm on-camera or behind it, I know I'll be involved in the business one way or another. Maybe I'll be following the Yankees around the country….now that would be fun!

Shimmy Exclusive Interview- Hok Konishi

Recently, Shimmy had the opportunity to steal a few minutes of Hok Konishi's time. What follows are his thoughts on life after SYTYCD, art and a bit of gratitude as well.

Shimmy: What did you do once you were eliminated from SYTYCD?

Hok: Well, nothing too much really. Did some interviews, just jumped back into reality. I did a show in England and then came back the next day to start rehearsing for the tour!! I have to say I was shocked at first though!

Shimmy: What are you currently doing?

Hok: I am currently in Japan for a couple weeks trying to get my status straight, and then I am back in LA doing more things!

Shimmy: Tell us about your background (Where you've trained etc.)

Hok: Well I cant say I really have a strong "trained" background but I started dancing at a hiphop studio in Tokyo, did that for 3 years and then after that I just started practicing everyday at the train station (because studios were too expensive for us to rent)- hard floor, extremely hot in the summer, and extremely cold in the winter... probably the worst condition.

Shimmy: How did you get started in dance?

Hok: I watched a dance show in Japan and something just clicked inside me

Shimmy: What inspires you?

Hok: Anything and everything in life. I think that beauty exists everywhere, you just have to change perspectives sometimes and find it. Once you have done that, then you can tweak it and make it your original and then express it with dance, art and such.

Photo: Tania Gressell

Shimmy: What part of Japan are you from and do you return there often?

Tokyo. One of the best places I have been. The food is amazing!

Shimmy: What do you love and miss most about Japan and England as well?

Hok: Hmm, again I will have to say food and the convenience for Japan. and as for England, the freedom and my old friends... even though I have recently started talking to them again! I am so happy about that.

Shimmy: What other genre would you have liked to have tried while on SYTYCD?

Hok: Ohhh, I know that it is completely out of my field but I would have wanted to try contemporary.

Shimmy: What dance from the show (danced by someone else) was your favorite?

Hok: I really loved the top 8 dance done by Mia Michaels (Imogen Heap's The Moment I Said It)... amazing

Shimmy: Tell us more about your visual art.

Hok: Well I don't know if it could be categorized in "visual art" but I have always loved to draw since I was one years old. I was only able to actually "study" art at little classes at school and a year and a half at Santa Monica College by my mentor Nathan Ota (he is truly amazing!!). I really like to draw, paint and do some stuff on the computer too when I have the time.

Shimmy: If I put your ipod on shuffle who would I be listening to?

Hok: Ohh, probably something like Roisin Murphy, m.i.a., System of a Down, M-Flo, random hiphop beats

Shimmy: What are three things you cannot exist without?

Hok: My ibook, cellphone, and my Nintendo DS.... all electronics!

Shimmy: If in ten years you aren't dancing, what might you be doing instead?

Hok: Most likely taking my art more seriously, owning some kind of buisiness

Shimmy: What one thing would you like your fans to know?

Hok: I would really like them to know that I truly appreciated their support while I was on the show. I will be having a lot more to come with my crew QUEST so it would be great if they can keep their eyes out!

Shimmy Exclusive- Catching Up With Lacey Schwimmer

The last installment of FOX's So You Think You Can Dance pulled in massive ratings, who wasn't watching? The top ten finalists'rode the wave and embarked on a massive tour across the U.S. (with a quick stop in Canada). Shimmy recently had the opportunity to catch up with Top Four Finalist Lacey Schwimmer.

Shimmy: What was one of your favorite behind the scenes moments from SYTYCD?

Lacey: From the tv show it would have to be before each show we taped...we would be warming up getting finishing touches on hair and makeup and hearing fans in the audience going crazy! The energy was through the roof!
On tour I would say the first time we stepped on stage from our lift...it was the most wild and scary thing I have experienced!

Shimmy: What dance done by another couple do you wish you'd have been able to do on the show?

Lacey: I honestly loved the Vagabond routine performed by Jesus and Sarah. But if I was able to do perform one it would have to be the West Coast Swing done by Pasha and Sarah....its was rad!

Shimmy: Was there anyone on the show that you would have like to have been paired with but weren't?

Lacey: Haha! Dominic. He and I are the biggest goofballs, it would have been interesting!

Shimmy: What was your favorite smaller city to visit on tour and why?

Lacey: I loved Atlantic city, SHOPPING! Toronto was amazing even tho we were there for only a few hours!

Shimmy: What rituals if any do you have before performing?

Lacey: The usual, stretching, singing to my ipod, goofing off, and doing bad dancing with Jaimie...you would have to see it!

Shimmy: Your fans absolutely love your style because it's unique so we'll ask for them, where do you buy your clothes?

Lacey: Thats cute! Well my style is unique and I find is always changing! For the most part vintage is my favorite, Planet Funk, Urban Outiftters, Diesel, Betsy Johnson, and TARGET SWEATS.

Shimmy: What ballroom dancers (aside from family) have inspired you most and why?

Lacey: Growing up my dad coached the 16 time World Champions Donny Burns and Gaynor Fairwether. Brilliant dancers, brilliant people.

Shimmy: How is your knee healing? Is this your first major dance-related injury?

Lacey: FIRST? Noway! I have torn and strained muscles all my life, part of a dancers world if you ask me! But this is the first time I have ever had surgery. My knee is healing well, I have 4 small scars, but since I've been pushing my knee to the max, I have tendonitis in the patella. (the cap) Painful ,but working through it.

Shimmy: Have you begun training again?

Lacey: I just started retraining my center of balance ,which has gotten the best of me. Its really frustrating to know that you cant do things the way you used to. Although, my therapist is saying i am already stronger than before my injury!

Shimmy: What do you intend to do once fully healed?

Lacey: I think my competing days are over... But im scheduled to teach all over the world, judge, make appearances, and perform. I also plan on getting into acting and choreography.

Shimmy: Who is your favorite choreographer and what draws you to their work?

Lacey: Mia (Michaels), was among my favorites to watch and work with. I think anyone would agree.

Shimmy: What's on your ipod?

Lacey: Haha! What isn't on my ipod? Im really into artists nobody has heard of, but you can't deny classics like the Spice Girls, Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk, Chris Garneau, Mirah, Ima Robot, Kanye West, Justin Nozuka, Mika, Young Love...you name it more than likely have it!

Shimmy: 3 things you cannot live without?

Lacey: -Black and White anything
-Tmobile Sidekick
-Fast food

Shimmy: Tell us something that about yourself that will surprise us.

Lacey: I hold annual scavenger hunts at WALMART. ( you have a list, have to get everything on that list, and for a bonus you have to find the biggest object to sneek into someones shopping cart, I once got a tire into someones cart!)

Shimmy: If in 15 years you're no longer dancing, what might you be doing instead?

Lacey: Owning my own Chick-Fil-A?? Haha, no. I would only hope I was happy, healthy, and working with something I love dearly.
